In 2023, the median value of the gross reported income less personal income tax paid per taxable person was 11,446 € in Portugal. 71 municipalities had median income values higher than the national reference. The municipalities with median values above 13,000 € were Oeiras (15,862 €), Lisboa (14,282 €), Alcochete (13,654 €), Cascais (13,406 €), Coimbra (13,241 €), Porto Santo (13,089 €), and Évora (13,003 €).
The median net income per person increased by 7.2% compared to the previous year. In all municipalities, except for Odemira, the median value of income per taxable person increased and in 137 of the municipalities the increase was higher than the country. Between 2022 and 2023 there was an increase in the annual rate of change of the median income value in 66% of municipalities (197 out of 298 municipalities with available information). In 67municipalities, the acceleration in income was greater than or equal to that observed in the country (1.8 percentage points).
In 2023, the Gini coefficient of net income per person was 35.5% in Portugal (-0.2 p.p. than in 2022). In 31 municipalities inequality in income distribution was higher than in the country, with the municipalities of Lisboa (42.6%), Vila do Porto (42.5%), Porto (41.8%), and Cascais (40.2%) standing out. Between 2022 and 2023, 210 municipalities showed a decrease in the asymmetry of net income per person, with the Azorean municipality of Lagoa registering the highest decrease (-2.5 p.p.).
