The conduct of agricultural censuses in the European Union is framed by legislation which was specifically designed for that purpose. The adoption by all Member States of harmonised concepts, classifications and methodologies makes it possible to ensure the comparability of final results. The RA09 adopts the provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1166/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the Handbook on the respective implementation. In spite of the framework required by this legislative basis which is common to all Member States, there is sufficient flexibility for collection instruments and characteristics to be observed to be adapted to each country’s own specificities. Hence, national users’ needs will be met and their interest ensured.
