Concepts
  • REFERENCE PERIOD:  Period to which the information refers and which may be a specific day or a time interval (month, fiscal year, calendar year, among others).
  • SURFACE WATER:  Water which flows over, or rests on the surface of a land mass, natural watercourses such as rivers, streams, brooks, lakes, etc., as well as artificial watercourses such as irrigation, industrial and navigation canals, drainage systems, alluvium (subsurface water) and natural and artificial reservoirs. Excluded are sea-water, permanent bodies of stagnant water both natural and artificial, and transitional waters, such as brackish swamps, lagoons and estuaries.
Formule [Water bodies (rated "Good" or "Excellent")/ Total water bodies]*100
Measure unit (symbol) Percentage (%)
Power of 10  0
Observations The indicator refers to the ecological status, which reflects the quality of the structure and functioning of the aquatic ecosystems associated to surface waters and it's evaluated through a comparison of the data obtained for the various quality elements (biological, hydromorphological, physicochemical and specific pollutants), with the reference conditions defined for each ecotype. A water body is associated with a territorial unit when the area of intersection is greater than 0,3 km2 or, in the case of coastal water bodies, when the coastline of the territorial unit coincides with the water body at more than 1 km, with the exception of two coastal water bodies that were associated with the municipalities of Caminha and Vila Real de Santo António.
